What is the Logos Free Books (Wordtheque)? |
|
"Wordtheque" is Logos’ multimedia library. It is index-linked word for word, and is a multifunctional interface, with more than
749,091,032 words, which continues to grow at the rate of more than 500,000 words every day. This multimedia library is able to furnish
its users with a collection of literary works, novels, technical and scientific texts, translations, monographs and much more in 111
languages from Afrikaans, Hmong, and Cree to Maori, etc.
When you open the starting page of Wordtheque you find this sentence "you can tell a word by the company it keeps." This sentence has a
deep meaning. It reminds us that a single word, without its context, has no meaning as the value and the expressive power of words
depend on their cultural and historical context. For instance let us consider the word "dog"; in the United States and in many other
European countries it is linked to the concept of "man’s best friend", while, in China, it can also mean a "delicious culinary specialty
for holidays!"
The word obtains meaning in relation to its link with the other terms before and after it in a sentence. Wordtheque was originally
designed as a tool of support for Logos translators in order to help them to grasp the use of specific words in the framework of
different contexts and to insert the words correctly in specific contexts.

It is sufficient to click on the link “Wordtheque” and a page with two functional components appears on the monitor:
1. a search engine at the top
2. many names of languages which can be clicked, lower down.
The second component provides you with a “traditional” consultation: clicking one of the languages you will open a page where you can
find the works which are registered in the database for that specific language.
There is a list of the works according to the author and the title. It is possible to start one of the two searches, clicking the
relative link. It is also possible to concentrate the search by selecting a letter in the alphabet in order to have direct access to all
works or authors which start with that specific letter.
The upper component of the page allows you access to a particular kind of “revolutionary” search: through words. The window has several
fields. You have to select a language in the first field on the left, then you type the word or the sentence you are interested in, in
the next field on the right. These two fields are functional to the search and therefore they are compulsory. The two fields on the same
level, author and title, are optional and so they do not necessarily require to be completed. However, they are useful to limit the
extent of the search. Clicking “Search” the search begins. It will enable you to access a new page containing context information for
the word or the sentence you are looking for, Match 1, Match 2, etc. corresponding to as many contextual extracts as there are specific
contexts present in the database of the Wordtheque. The text within the extracts can be read right through thanks to the coloured arrows
indicating up and down on the right. The word or phrase you are looking for is highlighted within the text. It will be sufficient just
to click on it in order to have access to Logos Dictionary, where you can see the translation of that word in many other languages, hear
the right pronunciation (clicking on the loudspeaker) and even do a search in the entire Web. |
